An opportunity exists for promising young singers of any voice (treble, soprano, alto, tenor or bass), to apply for a choral scholarship. Two scholarships are available, each to the value of £480 per annum.
They are awarded at the discretion of the Director of Music to choristers between the ages of 11 and 18 who have passed the RSCM Bronze Award (or who have grade 3 in any instrument) and have demonstrated potential and dedication.
Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis but the expectation is that they will be renewed subject to ongoing review. Scholarships are given as a reward for hard work but also to provide financial support for music tuition (in any area / instrument) beyond choral scholars’ work at St Mary’s.
Who should apply?
Any music-loving young person who:
- is aged between 11 and 18
- has achieved the RSCM Bronze Award (or grade 3 in any instrument)
- has been a member of a choir, or other musical group for at least around a year and can prove a strong level of commitment
- enjoys singing and is enthusiastic about music
Scholarships are awarded on merit and are limited to the number available at any given time. We hope to increase the number available over time.
To attend regularly for the Friday rehearsal, Sunday morning Eucharist and twice monthly evensong and for special services as they arise, especially around Christmas and Easter. The choir has holiday during the weeks after Christmas and Easter and for the whole of August. A reasonable attendance level is expected but it is recognised that other commitments will mean there will be times when you can’t be around.
By BACS, ideally, if not a cheque, paid at the end of each term, into a parent’s / guardian’s account.
How are scholarships funded?
The majority of the scholarships are currently funded from within the choir’s own financial resources but once the scheme is established we will seek sponsorship from local business, national awarding bodies and philanthropic individuals in order to endow further named scholarships. We’d be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to invest in young people in this way.
By completing the application form here. (or just come along to St Mary’s on a Friday at 7.00 p.m. and we’ll take things from there)
