A Commemoration Service for HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will take place at St Mary’s on Friday 16th April at 6 pm. Unfortunately we can only accommodate a specially invited congregation but the service will be live streamed to YouTube.

If you do not have the technology in place to watch this at home we are making provision for it to be simultaneously screened in St Mary’s Hall. Please book a place if you wish to be a part of that.

We join with all the people of Ross, Walford and Brampton Abbotts in expressing our deep sadness at the death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

We acknowledge his long devotion to the HM The Queen, the Nation and the Commonwealth.

The church is open until 5pm each day for the next week for private prayer. Please respect social distancing while inside the building.

The Royal Family has requested donations to charity to mark the Duke’s death. If you prefer to lay a floral tribute it can can be placed on the triangular area of grass to the right of the north door.

The Churches Conservation Trust has been running weekly lectures on Thursdays at 1 pm. They’ve been first rate!

Today’s was delivered by Nigel Saul on the subject of the development of churches in Herefordshire in the early 14th Century. You can watch it here. St Mary’s is, in essence, an early 14th Century building.

I can personally recommend his recent book on the same subject – Decorated in Glory

Happy Easter!

Here’s a testy piece for Good Friday, recorded by the choir this week and used in this afternoon’s three hour service. It’s the seventeenth century Venitian composer, Antonio Lotti’s 8 part piece, Crucifixus.

He was crucified also for us, under Pontius Pilate he suffered and was buried.

Count Your Blessings has so far raised about £2200.

It’s Maundy Thursday, the day when Jesus taught us to love one another.

He did this at the very first Communion service, with his disciples, in the Upper Room.

He demonstrated his command by washing the feet of his disciples.

Today is Palm Sunday. The 9.30 service from St Mary’s is about to get underway.

This week we celebrate Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. Don’t forget to collect your palm cross from St Mary’s before the service on Sunday. The church is open from 9-5 tomorrow, as usual.

We congratulate our Rector, The Rev’d Sean Semple, who has been invited by the Bishop of Hereford to become the next Rural Dean of the Ross and Archenfield Deanery. He will be licensed in a short ceremony at the Bishop’s Palace on the 29^th March 2021.

As Rural Dean, he will provide missional and strategic leadership of the 40 parishes and churches in the south of the Diocese of Hereford and county, together with the Rev’d Tim Starling who will become Assistant Rural Dean when he takes up his post as Priest in Charge of the Wye Reaches Group of Parishes (near Monmouth) in the summer, and Major Patrick Darling who is the Lay Co-chair of the Deanery. 

The appointment comes at a challenging time for a Deanery that has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and faces a number of clergy retirements in the next few years. Sean asks for your ongoing prayers as he takes on this important role.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) marks a year since the first lockdown of this pandemic.

The Ross Parishes will be participating in the National Day of Reflection with a short service starting at 11:55 including a minute of silence.

Please join us as we remember all those that have been lost in this pandemic and give thanks for all those who have worked so hard through it. 11.55 am either at the Plague Cross in Ross Churchyard or in the churchyard in Walford. Alternatively, The Ross service will be live streamed on Facebook.
