Walford Harvest Festival

Walford Harvest Festival will be on Sunday 3rd October at 11.00 am followed by a Ploughman’s lunch; Charge  £10 per head to include a drink (pay on the day); CHILDREN FREE!

Try Alpha

Our next Alpha course will start on the 28th September 2021 in St Mary’s Church at 7pm. You may have heard how this Course has inspired many people, and now there is an opportunity for you to experience it yourself – or be part of the team that help host it.

Alpha will run for 8 weeks until the end of November. All are welcome, and if you would simply like to support Alpha perhaps you could help with catering, or welcoming, or washing up, or marketing or making a donation. All these are ways of inspiring faith in others. Please contact Lou in the Office if you would like to attend Alpha or be part of the support team.

What is Alpha?

Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that tackle some of life’s big questions and explore the basics of the Christian faith.

Who is Alpha for?

Alpha is for anyone who’s curious. The talks are designed to encourage conversation in a friendly, open and informal environment. No question is out of bounds and you are free to discuss as much or as little as you wish.

What to expect

The course runs for 8 weeks with each session beginning with food and including a short thought-provoking talk followed by a discussion where you can share what you think with a small group of people. Come for as many of the 8 weeks as you want – everyone’s welcome and there’s no pressure, follow-up or charge.

Messy Church @ St Mary’s celebrates the start of a new school term with a Messy Drop-in Morning. 11am- 12.30 on Thursday 2 September.

Come and experience Messy Church; meet old and new friends. 11am onwards:

  • Messy drop in crafts and activities.
  • 11.30 – 11.45: Songs and a story to explore new beginnings;
  • eating together – bring a snack, drinks provided.

Are you ready for h.Art

St Mary’s is proud to be taking part as a venue this year and we have 10 artists who will be showing and selling their work in church from Saturday 4th September onwards. We are just one of seven Ross venues so why not make a day of it.

Tasty home made cake and coffee will be available in church every day through the festival.

Final update from Janet & Nick

With a little help from Sean, Jen and Lex during the week, Janet and Nick are now back on track and just have the Hereford stretch to complete tomorrow. They will do this ending with prayers by the shrine of St Thomas Cantilupe before evensong.

Update on Nick & Janet’s walk

As you are probably aware, Nick and Janet are doing a number of walks between Swansea and Hereford that together constitute the St Thomas Way pilgrimage. Nick’s health issues are resulting in a later finish than originally planned; they are just over half way through.

This is a splendid fund raising exercise for St Mary’s Church, Ross-on-Wye (particularly splendid given the extra effort they are putting in, given Nick’s failing health) and there is still plenty of time to sponsor their efforts. We’re currently at around £2000 but we can go further with your help. There’s more background, and a link to the giving page at https://rossparishes.uk/st-thomas-way.

A number of people from St Mary’s joined them for a relatively straightforward section of the walk las Saturday. Here are some pictures. Our thanks to St Mary’s Church in Usk for letting us into their locked church and allowing us to use a section of the churchyard for a picnic.

Today they have been in Newport, Janet writes:

It’s hard to find much of Mediaeval origin in Newport, particularly with St Woolos Cathedral closed to visitors [and apparently pilgrims], but the castle was bigger than expected. Here’s a glimpse of it behind a mosaic celebrating Newport’s industrial heritage.

Janet & Nick’s walk, Days 3, 4 & 5

Janet and Nick are making good progress! Here are a few pictures from the last three days, and an update from Janet:


” Due to problems with the internet earlier in the week, we were unable to book admission to St Fagan’s Museum, so Day 5 is Caerphilly.The walk starts from the car park at the top of Caerphilly mountain, with wonderful views of the town and castle, but we did miss starting our walk at a church. It then takes you down to the Castle, the largest in Wales. Unfortunately, it’s a very long, steep climb back up to the car!”

Janet & Nick – Day 2

We started the day worshipping at Christ Church, Swansea before driving to Margam for Stage 2 of the pilgrimage at Margam Country Park.

The walking route took us up the biggest hill in the area, about a 600ft climb.
